Place Value: Tens, Ones and Beyond
A digit’s place tells you its value: in 347, the 3 means 300, the 4 means 40 and the 7 means 7.
How it works
Read a whole number from right to left. The first position is ones, then tens, hundreds, thousands and so on. Each move left makes the place ten times larger.
Worked example
What is the value of 6 in 4,682?
- The 6 is in the hundreds place.
- Hundreds have a value of 100.
- 6 × 100 = 600.
